THE LABYRINTH AT MAPLE GROVE CEMETERY

Plans for the Center at Maple Grove include construction of a Meditation Garden, located off the intermediate lobby on the east side of the building. The garden will include a winding Labyrinth – a wonderful tool for meditation, contemplation and prayer.

In September 2005, as part of our Day of Remembrance/Lantern Festival celebration we constructed a temporary labyrinth near the Lake and the Lakeview Memorial Garden.

What Exactly Is A Labyrinth?

Labyrinths are a symbol for spiritual journey and renewal, combining the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a wandering but purposeful path. It represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world. You might call it a spiritual quest. Labyrinths have been used throughout history as meditation, contemplation and prayer tools.

To walk the Labyrinth is to create balance from within and gain self awareness. The paths loop and spiral, mirroring the places in life where we make transitions and carve out new paths for ourselves. There is only one way in and one way out. You follow the path into the center and follow the some path out of the Labyrinth.

 Walking the Labyrinth

§         As you prepare to walk the Labyrinth you may wish to read your favorite scripture, prayer or mantra. Or, you may want to clear your head to allow time to open yourself to all possibilities. Interestingly, not everyone walks a Labyrinth, some skip, some dance, while others stroll in deep thought. Whatever makes you comfortable is the way to go.

§         As you walk, be aware of your pace. Are you rushing through, walking briskly or strolling slowly? Chances are the way you walk the Labyrinth is very much in keeping with your own life pace. You may want to reflect a moment on this.

§         You may encounter others while walking on your journey. As you pass them, simply be aware that they, too, are on a spiritual journey and be courteous.

§         The Labyrinth center, metaphorically speaking, is symbolic of the heart of God or the center of self and the Universe. It is said that here you are open to wisdom and enlightenment.

§          Reflect on your Labyrinth walk. You may want to write what you felt, describing your thoughts during the experience.
