George Petry (1833-1890) Maple 6
 
 
George Petry was born in Paterson New Jersey in 1833. He learned the  
trade of tin, copper and sheet iron and work in that field in New York  
City. In 1866 he located in Long Island City where he established a  
large tin factory. In 1870, Mr. Petry was one of the first school  
commissioners appointed by Mayor Ditmars.
 
In politics Mr. Petry became well known and in 1877 he was elected  
Alderman at Large and served until spring of 1879. In 1880 he was  
elected Mayor, but was counted out by the Debevoise group. He  
succeeded in establishing the validity of his election through the  
courts, and took office after the arrest and imprisonment of Debevoise  
in 1883. He was applauded for getting the area in better financial  
state.He was reelected in 1883, but in 1886 was defeated by Gleason  
who ran against him.
 
  He resided at 163 Twelfth Street in Long Island City. He was twice  
married and had three children.
