Harold
Campbell (1884-1942) Prospect 137
Harold
George Campbell was Superintendent of Schools of the
City of New York at the time of his death at age 58.
He was
born in an Aberdeenshire fishing village on the coast of
Scotland. His first teaching job was at age 19. His
entire adult life he was either an educator or an
administrator in the public schools. He was a keen
observer of children and adults and accumulated wisdom
and tolerance.
He dealt
with and overcame many obstacles in the education system
such as helping physically disabled, backward and gifted
children, providing playgrounds and summer school, art
and music programs and working with individuals.
At his
funeral tribute it was stated; "Dr. Campbell gave of
himself unstintingly to the best interests of more than
one million public school children whom he loved and to
the school service which he served. He did not spare
himself, seldom enjoying the respite of a vacation and
giving freely of his time and energy to the innumerable
tasks before him. He was essentially a great humanizing
influence in our schools."
Mayor
Fiorello LaGuardia stated at his funeral; " Dr. Campbell
was always a leader in the great educational system. The
children were his children and he had no interest other
than the development and education of his children. His
heart and mentality were constantly at work for his
children and this work overcame any bodily pain. How
joyous he must be at this time to hear the voices of his
own children. There are times of sorrow that cannot be
expressed in words. This is such a time. Only music can
do it."
Dr.
Campbell's Funeral was held in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at
the Greenpoint Presbyterian Church. Over 750 people
attended this event.
