Isaac Newton Failor (1851-1925) Prospect Section

 Isaac Newton was born in Lima, Ohio on February 9, 1851.

He attended and graduated Wesleyan University in Ohio. He married Eva Cowan in Goshen,Indiana in 1875.

He had a long career in education starting with the Rust Normal School in Huntsville, Alabama and later principal of the Baldwinville Academy in New York. From 1892 to 1897 he was professor of mathematics at the Boy’s High School of Brooklyn.

In 1897 he became superintendent of schools in Richmond Hill, Queens. He organized Richmond Hill High School in 1900. He was responsible for the Observation Dome atop the school that boasted state of the art telescope for the study of astronomy. The cost of the telescope was an astounding  $6,000, a large amount of money for that time.The school was demolished in the mid 1920’s to make room for a bigger school. He remained principal until 1917, retiring to take on the cultivation of roses, dahlias and other flowers. He wrote several books on mathematics. During World War I, he was the active head of the Red Cross in Richmond Hill. He resided at 84-24 113th Street in Richmond Hill. He had a son, Newton C. Failor and a daughter Mrs. Ann F. Hubbard who lived in Pelares, Mexico.
