Isaac Penny Hubbard (1844-1925)  Summit 84

The Hubbard Family originated in Norfolk, England. Isaac Gardiner was born in England on March 12th, 1844. In the mid eighties Isaac and his wife Rebecca and son Isaac Penny emigrated to New York. Isaac Penny Hubbard became a lawyer and had offices in the Vanderbilt Building on Nassau Street. He subsequently moved to Richmond Hill and set up residence in a splendid house across the street from Jacob Riis. The street was then called Beech Street.

The Hubbard house still stands to this day, but the Jacob Riis home was demolished in the early 1970’s to make way for an apartment house. Isaac joined the Grand Army of the Republic Post #29-NY and fought in the Civil War. We have in our possession copies of letters of correspondence between Isaac and his cousins back in England at the turn of the century. He had two sons, Franklin A. and William, who both served in World War II and had one daughter, Edith Rebecca.

Isaac lived until he was 81 years old  in April of 1925 and is buried in the Summit section of the cemetery, along with many family members. The growing archive of Maple Grove Cemetery intends to preserve and maintain these important family histories.
