Serge Bazavoff was born in Russia and lived at 140 West 58th Street in Manhattan.

He served in the Russian Army in World War I and came to the United States in 1920. He graduated from George Washington University. In 1923 he joined The Lion Match Company of Long Island City and became Chairman of the Board. The Lion Match Company was one of the largest companies that manufactured matches and match books in the United States.

Serge died in September of 1958 at the age of 72. Returning home from his summer house in Danbury, Connecticut, he suffered at heart attack and hit an abutment at 59th Street and the West Side Highway. He was survived by his wife, Julia.
