Volney Chapin Daggett (1859-1943) Maple

V. Chapin Daggett was the founder and
director of Daggett and Ramsdell, a well known cosmetic company
still in business today. He was born on May 8, 1895. He resided
at 118-24 83rd Avenue in Kew Gardens, Queens.
He was born in South Weymouth,
Massachusetts and graduated from the Massachusetts College of
Pharmacy . In 1890 he opened a drug store near the old Waldorf
Astoria at Fifth Avenue and 33rd Street with Clifford Ramsdell.
Early on he started selling his own cold
cream made from his own formula. This formula contained an
ingredient that made it remain fresh and not spoil. In 1895 he
moved to larger quarters and then in 1917 moved to 216 West 14th
Street. He also added other cosmetics, shaving preparations and
perfumes to his line. He retired as owner of the business in
1929, continuing as director.
Some of the perfumes that Daggett and
Ramsdell manufactured were ; “Debutante”, “Gay Manhattan” and
“Prim.”
He passed away at the age of 84 in 1943.
Clifford Ramsdell died in 1911.
His wife Phoebe Ione Chase on May 17,
1883. She died April 25, 1941 and is also buried at Maple Grove,
along with their son, Griswold T. Daggett. He passed away at the
age of 47 on July 21, 1941. He at the time was plant manager for
the company. Volney survived both his wife and son.
