Roger Durham Hannay (1930-2006) Summit 16B

  Born in Plattsburgh, New York on September 9, 1930, Mr. Hannay was a composer who wrote more than 120 pieces of music and served as mentor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His portfolio included ten symphonies, five operas, and numerous chamber music works. He was the recipient of many grants and commissions, including those from the North Carolina Symphony, the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, the American Music Center, the Kenan Foundation, the Pogue Foundation, and the North Carolina School of the Arts. He was a member of the Southeastern Composers League. He created and directed the New Music Ensemble, a composer-concert series and the electronic music studio ay UNC-Chapel Hill. He was the author of My Book of Life, a collection of autobiographical essays completed in 1997. He retired in 1995, but continued to write music. He is survived by his wife, Janet, and his daughter, Dawn Hannay, a violinist with the New York Philharmonic.
