William
Trist Bailey was a real estate mogul who was so wealthy at one
time owned his own private island called Sloop Bar Hassock in
Jamaica Bay. He was one of the largest real estate owners in the
Bayswater
section of Far Rockaway which he purchased in 1878. He also had
many real estate holdings on Long Island and Islip. He built the
Bayswater Hotel which bankrupted him in 1905. He had his share
of lawsuits, including one with Princess Dolores Radziwell and
William Waldorf Astor. His wife Hannah, sued him for $50,000 in
1888, claiming she loaned him the money to purchase the large
hotel. They were separated for many years. Bailey was rumored to
be related to Field Marshall Lord Roberts, a hero from the Boer
War in 1900. He died in February of 1910. His gravesite is one
of a kind, with the grave being built into the sloping hill. It
was recently restored.
